On March 8, 2012 over 400 people gathered together at the Murano Hotel to celebrate International Women's Day, the Fund for Women & Girls, and their 2012 grantees. The Power of the Purse event kicked off with, as you might expect, a vivacious purse auction! From $5 to $500, there was a huge selection of purses to suit any taste. At the end of the auction, attendees settled into lunch and the program.
A strong value of the Fund for Women & Girls is listening. The Fund spent most of this- past year asking questions of women in our community and listening to their answers. At the luncheon we had the opportunity to share with our supporters not only what we have heard, but the actions we have taken based upon these conversations.
Kelly Goodsell spoke about our careful listening and intentional grantmaking. The audience watched a video that showcased the experience of participants from our grantee agencies. But the highlight of the afternoon was hearing from two amazing women. One nearly a highschool dropout, who through an after school dance program, transformed her behavior and her life. The other woman was an immigrant mother with four children, who was able to attend English as a Second Language and a GED program. That education has not only transformed her life but the lives and future of her young children as well.
It was an amazing day and an inspiring way to locally celebrate International Women's Day!
