Name: Sha-lu'juan Williams
School: Foss High School
"I pledge to Be the Spark by promoting civic engagement among my peers."
Sha-Lu'Juan believes in serving her community and peers. The first time Sha stood up and spoke out in a leadership role was during a middle school ASB election as an 8th grader at McIlvaigh. After she ran for ASB President and won, she realized that her voice could make a small difference. She works to support and encourage her peers, because she believes she can make an even greater impact with their help. Since then, she has been elected Secretary of Cherberg Senate during the 2010 YMCA Youth Legislature in Olympia and this year she was elected Assistant Attorney General for the Youth Legislature. In addition, Sha was selected to serve as a member of the Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) and elected as LYAC Outreach Committee Chair.
She is a strong advocate for diffusing conflict and maintaining peace. As a teenager living in a single parent home, Sha never makes excuses and truly believes that she can achieve anything. She encourages her peers to get involved and is always talking about the importance of education. Sha-Lu'Juan inspires and promotes hope within her school community and among her peers. Many students don't envision being in a place of higher learning and haven't even started to dream about their future, until they take a moment to talk to Sha-Lu'Juan. When they listen, they realize that she is one of them and has faced the same struggles and hardships, yet continues to persevere. Her enthusiasm and optimism are contagious.
