Vibrant Community Grantmaking Program
Through the development of the Vibrant Community program, the Community Foundation has a philosophical shift in our grantmaking. This concept of a Vibrant Community is a focused strategy to use our discretionary funding to make a defined impact in Pierce County.
There are three key components of the future direction of our grantmaking: addressing root causes, identifying systemic challenges and supporting community driven solutions.
The Board and staff at the Community Foundation have worked together to imagine the possibilities of a Vibrant Community, creating an aspirational vision of what could be. We developed grantmaking definitions for our values and used this as a lens to develop the grant focus areas and made the decision to prioritize funding programs that change the conditions, not just meet the needs.
The value definitions led to the new focus areas and their definitions: arts and culture, basic needs, education, environment and neighborhoods and communities.
Nonprofit organizations in Pierce County are our partners in community development and this is the beginning of a forward thinking conversation about the needs of Pierce County and the evolving role of the Community Foundation. This is the beginning of the process and we are paying attention to the unintended impacts this might have in the community.
In addition to the philosophical changes to our grantmaking, there are changes to the grant application, significant differences to the timeline, process and application components.
The Community Foundation has also added two funding opportunities to the bi-annual grantmaking program: Capital Projects and Organizational Capacity.
