Art is an Alternative to Violence
The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation invites you to participate in a youth-adult conversation to identify opportunities and gaps in our community for youth to engage in art as an alternative to violence.
Please join us Thursday, December 3 from 4:00-6:00pm at the REACH Center located at 714 S 27th Street Tacoma, 98409 (on the corner of 27th & Tacoma Avenue).
In our community, we are seeing programs that promote artistic expression and creativity for our young people in danger of closing. Our hope is to explore creative collaborations that increase these opportunities for our young people in middle school through young adulthood. This conversation is an extension of what was learned from the Youth Against Violence Community Dialogues held this past September and October.
One of the most important revelations from the Community Dialogues is that our young people have a powerful voice that when partnered with a caring adult creates an inspiring impact on our community. The Community Foundation recognizes that we do not have the answers, or the funding, to solve this community issue on our own, however we do know that a collaborative conversation will help move us in the right direction.
Below are a few questions to consider before the meeting.
1. What are the existing artistic opportunities available for youth in our community?
2. What are the elements of a program that attract middle school aged students to participate? High school students? Young adults?
3. What are the characteristics of a program that make it a priority for the organization to continue operating during hard economic times? What strategies have organizations used to help sustain these programs?
4. What do you hope to achieve from participating in this discussion? If you are from an organization that serves youth, we invite you to bring at least two youth representatives to participate in the conversation.
Please RSVP to Tanajah Mims, Youth Against Violence Coordinator, yav@gtcf.org or 253.383.5622.
