Founded in 1999, the Fund for Women & Girls (FFW&G) recognized the need to support organizations that specifically benefit women and girls. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by a number of circumstances that limit their ability to participate fully and effectively in the community.
Over the last 10 years, FFW&G awarded 101 grants totaling $315,324.
Currently, the fund uses an integrated approach to empower women and girls in Pierce County. Each year the FFW&G convenes for community involvement, fundraising and feedback. From the 2009 convening, we discovered most problems facing women and girls have common underlying issues. In 2010 responses from our Power of the Purse Luncheon inspired the creation of new grant guidelines:
The Fund for Women & Girls supports initiatives that address critical issues facing women and girls
by providing grants to programs that foster self esteem, self reliance, and empowerment.

We hope to positively impact women and girls in Pierce County by:

Convening
Through convening agencies, women and girls, grantmakers, and other specific populations we want to listen to community needs and identify opportunities for collaboration. We hope to also learn first- hand about emerging programs and projects worthy of support.

Collaboration
We know that there is power and synergy in collaboration. We want to initiate and participate - and we want to foster and encourage collaborations among individuals and organizations.

Capacity Building
We are exploring different ways of helping organizations build capacity. Ideas include: focusing on entrepreneurial granting; providing seed money for organizations; allocating larger grants to fewer projects, programs, and organizations. Additionally, the FFW&G will be looking at narrowing to a few focus areas for funding.   We will continue to fund operating support to enhance the effectiveness of existing organizations.  Finally, we will look at possibly grantmaking for collaborative projects – with several organizations/agencies involved.

The FFW&G is a field of interest fund of The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation.  As a fund, we do not have any programs or direct services.  The governing structure of the FFW&G is an advisory board that acts in a similar manner and function to a board of directors.  Currently, we have 18 board members who participate on at least one of eight sub-committees (fundraising, events, grants, education and outreach, strategic planning, budgeting, and nomination).

I want to get involved, how can I volunteer?

Here are four options available to you to get involved with the FFW&G:

1 Development Committee The Committee focuses on fundraising and works on securing corporate sponsorships to underwrite the cost of the luncheon, major donor asks, and an annual appeal.  Meets at Commencement Bay Coffee the second Monday of every month from 12-1.

2) Event Committee: The FFW&G has an incredible Event Committee that plans and brings to fruition one to two events a year.  Primarily, the Event Committee is the chief orchestrator of putting on the fabulous Power of the Purse luncheon.  They also support other committees should their work require event assistance.
Ad hoc meetings – usually lunchtime at GTCF office.

3) Grant Committee: The Grant Committee reads applications, performs site visits, and makes funding recommendations to the FFW&G Advisory Board.   It is the culmination of the work of the FFW&G.  Ad Hoc meetings in the summer/fall.

4)  Convening and Collaborating:  The Convening committee gathers different communities in conversation to deepen our understanding of the issues and possibilities for women and girls in Pierce County, and to inform the actions of the Fund.
Meets the third Wednesday of the month from 11:30-1:00 at GTCF office.

I'm interested in volunteering on one of the committees that supports the work of the FFW&G Adivsory Board.
What should I expect? What are the next steps?

The FFW&G would love to hear from you!  You can contact the FFW&G Coordinator Gina Anstey at gina@gtcf.org or at 253.383.5622 and express your interest in volunteering and if you are interested in a specific committee.

Committees generally meet once a month.  Committee meetings are held at a time set by the committee chair, although most occur during the lunch hour.    The Grant Committee does not have monthly meetings; instead meetings take place in late summer and fall for training, site visits, evaluations, and follow ups in the spring.
