The mission of Foundation for Healthy Generations, formerly known as Comprehensive Health Education Foundation (CHEF), is to create enduring health equity. Our core strategy for fulfilling our mission is to spark and support hope-filled action that generates enduring health equity by knowledgeably weaving together community wisdom, emerging science and effective policy. Our focus is on establishing public housing developments as model healthy communities where is it the norm for people to access health insurance, medical care, social services and local benefits; be physically active, eat healthy, know and connect with their neighbors, and advocate for change in the systems and policies that affect their community. We focus on public housing developments because they are geographically distinct neighborhoods with alarmingly high rates of health disparities and chronic health problems. Healthy Gen facilitates the Salishan Community Health Advocate Program, an innovative peer-led health education program at the Salishan housing community in east Tacoma that helps low-income individuals and families improve health knowledge and behavior, build community, access resources, and make healthy choices.
