Briefly describe what you do in your role with GTCF

I serve on the Board of Directors

What is the most exciting part of your role with GTCF?

Being able to support GTCF in creating and strengthening systemic approaches to how we work together in service to the general public. We are in a time where working together is so critical and meeting that moment is important.

What other jobs or positions have you held?

I'm currently the County Councilmember for Pierce County's District 4, which includes a large part of Tacoma, University Place and Fircrest. I'm also, a board member of the American Leadership Forum as well as a former fellow. Previously, I was Park Commissioner with Parks Tacoma, and former Tacoma Arts Commissioner. The majority of my work in community has been in the areas of education access, collective impact, and social services.

Outside of GTCF, what enjoyable activity do you engage in? What brings you joy?

I love to cook and the process of mixing art and science into what often becomes a gathering of friends and building community.

What activity, place, or event do you recommend other people check out in Pierce County?

Paddleboarding, exploring parks, restaurants, and markets throughout the area, and attending events and festivals from street fairs to more regional attractions like the kite festival.

What is the most inspiring book that you have read and why?

For Brown Girls with Sharp Edges and Tender Hearts -- As a first-generation born, oldest daughter of immigrant parents from Mexico, there is so much nuance in navigating culture, gender, identity, age and generational dynamics. I see all of that in the book through such a vulnerable lens. It's a constant reminder to be kind to oneself and compassionate to others. There is hope, there is sadness, there is determination, and there is perseverance in a short book.
