Foss Waterway Seaport: Half-Hull Carving

February 13 @ 6:00 pm

Intro to Basic Hull Modeling: Carving, Offsets, and Lofting
Join us in this three-week series to learn the essential skills of carving, offsets, and lofting your own half-hull boat model.
Before you can build a boat you need a design. But how is a boat’s shape designed and communicated to the builders? In the days before computer-aided design and large format printers, designers often began with an idea, a block of wood, and some carving tools. Through trial and error (and experience) they would carve the shape of the boat’s hull in a scaled-down version. In this class, you will step into the shoes of a 19th-century boat designer. Using nothing more than simple tools and a handful of clever geometry techniques, you will design and carve a scale model of a basic boat hull, then accurately translate this 3D shape into a table of offsets and buildable design drawings. You’ll learn the basics of lofting and how your design can be used to build an actual boat.

WHERE: 705 Dock Street, Tacoma, Washington
WHEN: Tuesdays, February 6, 13, & 20, 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM.
