Power of Two – Community Reinvestment Project Spotlight

Filed Under: Community Reinvestment Project,Vibrant Community - Posted @ 12:16pm

Power of Two is one 30 By/For Black, Latine, and Indigenous Kin organizations in Pierce County recommended by the Pierce County Local Advisory Team to receive funding through the Washington State Department of Commerce’s Community Reinvestment Project.

GTCF contracted with Commerce to convene the Pierce County Local Advisory Team and deliver funding based on their recommendations.  You can read more about this partnership here.

GTCF reached out to Power of Two Co-Founder, Dax, to learn more about their organization and how this Community Reinvestment Project funding is helping accelerate their work in Pierce County.

What inspired the creation of your organization/movement?

What inspired me was my daughter, who was feeding homeless youth at her school, and it motivated me to do something. It made me want to help those out there just like us when we were out there.

The inspiration came from her to make sure that no youth has to go through what she went through while we were on the streets.

What is a challenge – or opportunity – your organization/movement is addressing or trying to create solutions for?

We are addressing the challenge of getting enough donated items to help our families. We run several programs and lack supplies to support all the need. We are looking for donors and sponsors to help with items needed for our youth program and the Power Program.

To help address these needs, we are developing partnerships with other organizations to collaborate on efforts where our work and missions align.

What is an example of the actions, programs, or projects of your organization/movement?

We have a Power Program where we give out a host of items that our youth and families need.  One kit goes out each week, with different items such as: hygiene products, cleaning supplies, wellness kits, Animal kits, men’s and women’s kits, and youth kits.

This program supports basic needs for some of the “little stuff”, so they can take care of the big stuff, like rent and electricity.

How can funding – like what was delivered through the Community Reinvestment Project – help accelerate the work of Power of Two?

The CRP funding helped us to create a dedicated youth center space that made our youth feel seen and heard.  The funding also empowers and motivates us to continue to help our community and expand our programs for a better future.
